Historic Walking Tours

The River City is overflowing with historic sites and tales. Maymont, Edgar Allan Poe’s House, The White House of the Confederacy, we’ve pretty much got a site for any type of history buff. Why not soak up some of it the city’s unique past on a walking tour? Offered by the Valentine Richmond History Center, there are a variety of ongoing tours to choose from, as well as special tours on specific dates. Go here for a list of all available tours and reservation information. Here are a few that are upcoming:

June 4 from 2-4 p.m. Alleys and Parks of the Fan
Check out the area’s beautiful parks, as well as alleys and hidden gardens.

June 12 from 2-4 p.m. Hollywood Cemetery
Learn about this famous cemetery’s unique history, landscape design, architecture, symbols and residents.

June 18 from 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Raiders of the Lost Lock
Partnering with the Science Museum of Virginia, the History Center will offer a tour of Lock Island. Learn about the first dam across the James River, the earliest canal of the James River and Kanawha Canals, the mid-19th-century foundry and shot tower, and tour the home of Ambassador and Mrs. Walter Rice.

June 19 from 2 to 4 p.m. The Museum District
Learn about this area’s founding and its role in the westward expansion of the city.

June 25 from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. History Hounds Explore Oregon Hill
Dogs are invited on this tour of Oregon Hill.
