Dragon Boat Race

It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s a… dragon boat? Yep, you got it, 40-foot people-powered canoes decorated with Chinese dragon heads paddling to the beat of a drum and racing down the James River. You can see it for yourself Saturday, July 30, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the WhatIfCreditUnions.com Dragon Boat Festival. Teams of between 20 and 25 paddlers will compete in heats for your viewing pleasure.

The best place to catch the action? Rocketts Landing! Just hang out and view the boats go by, or grab a patio-side seat at Conch Republic or The Boathouse. It’ll be a fun day of spectatorship. Got a team that wants to race? You can still sign up. You’ll get a boat, your equipment and two practice sessions before the race. Go here for more information.
