A Day at the Races

The Kentucky Derby may be going on this weekend, but Richmond has its own opportunity for big hats, seersucker and fancy dresses. The 79th running of the Strawberry Hill Races takes place on May 21, and it’s only a short drive from Richmond in New Kent County.

Buy a shuttle or carload pass (go here for ticket information), pack a cooler, and head get ready to wander the track with a libation in hand while you watch steeplechase horse racing. Feeling festive? This year’s theme is Super ‘70s Secretariat, so feel free to add some retro flair to your Sunday best. You’ll sure to see a range of funky and fancy ensembles as you stroll along the outside of the track where Richmonders set up themed tents and camp out for the day with drinks and snacks.

Make sure to pick your favorite horse: for the second year, you are welcome to place wagers and make the races a little more interesting. This is certainly a fun chance to soak up some of Richmond’s distinctive culture, so start working on your costume and get ready for fun.
